Sebaceous Glands

Sebaceous glands (/sɪˈbeɪʃəs/; from Latin sebaceus, meaning 'tallow-like') are small oil-producing glands present in the skin of mammals. They are part of the integumentary system, the organ system that protects the body from various kinds of damage.

Function

Sebaceous glands produce and secrete sebum, a waxy, oily substance that helps to lubricate and waterproof the skin and hair of mammals. The glands are usually associated with hair follicles but can also be found in hairless areas of the skin.

Anatomy

Sebaceous glands are typically located in the dermis, the layer of skin between the epidermis (outer layer) and subcutaneous tissue. They are most abundant on the face and scalp, but also appear on all parts of the skin except the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

Clinical significance

Disorders of the sebaceous glands can lead to various skin conditions, such as acne, seborrheic dermatitis, and sebaceous cysts. Overactive sebaceous glands can result in excessive oil production, leading to oily skin and acne. Conversely, underactive glands can lead to dry skin.

Etymology

The term "sebaceous" is derived from the Latin word sebaceus, meaning 'tallow-like'. This refers to the waxy, oily nature of the substance produced by these glands.

Related terms
