Single-blind study

A Single-blind study (pronounced: SIN-gul BLIND STUH-dee) is a type of experimental design in research methodology where the participants are unaware of the treatment they are receiving to prevent bias. This method is commonly used in clinical trials to test the effectiveness of new medications or medical procedures.

Etymology

The term "Single-blind study" originates from the concept of blinding in statistics. The term "blind" refers to the practice of keeping the participants in the dark about certain information that might lead to bias. "Single" indicates that this blinding applies to one party, typically the participants.

Procedure

In a Single-blind study, the researchers know which participants are in the control group and which ones are in the experimental group. However, the participants do not know whether they are receiving the treatment or a placebo. This helps to prevent bias in the participants' responses.

Advantages and Disadvantages

The main advantage of a Single-blind study is that it can help to eliminate bias, as the participants' expectations will not affect the outcome of the study. However, a disadvantage is that the researchers may unintentionally influence the results, as they know which participants are receiving the treatment.

Related Terms
