Soccer

Soccer (pronounced /ˈsɒkər/), also known as football in many countries, is a team sport played with a spherical ball between two teams of eleven players. It is the world's most popular sport, played by over 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies.

Etymology

The term "soccer" originated in England, first appearing in the 1880s as an Oxford "-er" abbreviation of the word "association".

Gameplay

In soccer, the objective is to score more goals than the opposing team. Players move the ball across the field by striking it with any part of their body except their arms and hands. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition.

Positions

There are four main positions in soccer: the goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders, and forwards. Each position has a specific area of the field that they cover.

Rules

The game is governed by a set of rules, known as the Laws of the Game, which were originally codified in England by The Football Association in 1863.

Related Terms

  • Offside: A player is in an offside position if they are nearer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent when the ball is played to them.
  • Foul: A foul is an unfair act by a player, deemed by the referee to contravene the game's laws, that interferes with the active play of the game.
  • Penalty Kick: A method of restarting play in soccer, awarded to a team when a foul punishable by a direct free kick is committed by the opposing team within their own penalty area.
