Vanceril

Vanceril (pronounced: van-se-ril) is a brand name for the medication beclomethasone dipropionate, a synthetic corticosteroid derived from hydrocortisone. It is primarily used in the treatment of asthma and non-infectious rhinitis (including hay fever and other allergies), and for treatment and prevention of nasal polyposis.

Etymology

The term "Vanceril" is a brand name and does not have a known etymology. The generic name, beclomethasone dipropionate, is derived from hydrocortisone. The prefix "becl-" is a modification of "bet-", referring to the beta configuration of the hydroxyl at the 17th carbon position in the steroid structure.

Usage

Vanceril is used to prevent and control symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works directly in the lungs to make breathing easier by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways.
