Linear verrucous epidermal nevus (pronunciation: li-ne-ar ver-ru-cous epi-der-mal ne-vus) is a type of skin lesion that is characterized by a linear pattern of warty, skin-colored or pigmented papules. The term originates from the Latin verruca meaning wart, and nevus meaning birthmark or mole.

Definition

A Linear verrucous epidermal nevus is a benign epidermal nevus that often presents at birth or in early childhood. It is characterized by a linear array of verrucous (warty) papules that can be skin-colored, brown, or black. The lesions typically follow the lines of Blaschko, which are invisible lines on the skin that represent the migration of cells during fetal development.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of a linear verrucous epidermal nevus is the presence of a linear, warty skin lesion. These lesions can occur anywhere on the body, but are most commonly found on the limbs or trunk. They may be single or multiple, and can vary in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters. The lesions are typically asymptomatic, but can sometimes cause itching or discomfort.

Treatment

Treatment for a linear verrucous epidermal nevus is typically not necessary, as the condition is benign. However, treatment may be pursued for cosmetic reasons or if the lesions cause discomfort. Treatment options can include laser therapy, cryotherapy, or surgical removal.
