112 (Emergency Telephone Number)

112 is the common Emergency telephone number that can be dialed free of charge from most mobile telephones, and in some countries, fixed telephones in order to reach Emergency services (ambulance, fire and rescue, police).

Etymology

The number 112 was chosen as the international emergency phone number in 1991 at a conference of the European Union (EU). It was selected because it is easy to dial, even in the dark, as the numbers 1 and 2 are located in the top left corner of a phone keypad.

Usage

In many countries, dialing either 1-1-2 (used in Europe and parts of Asia) or 9-1-1 (used in the Americas) will connect callers to the local emergency services.
