Academy of Medical Sciences

The Academy of Medical Sciences (pronunciation: əˈkædəmi ɒv ˈmɛdɪkəl ˈsaɪənsɪz) is a professional body dedicated to the advancement of medical science and the promotion of its translation into benefits for society.

Etymology

The term "Academy" originates from the Greek Akadēmía, a grove of trees and gymnasium outside of Athens where Plato taught. "Medical" is derived from the Latin medicus, meaning "physician". "Sciences" comes from the Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge".

History

The Academy of Medical Sciences was established in 1998, following a proposal by the MRC (Medical Research Council) and the Royal College of Physicians. It was granted a Royal Charter in 2004, affirming its status as an independent body.

Role and Function

The Academy of Medical Sciences works to promote the translation of advances in medical science into health benefits. It does this through a range of activities, including policy work, promoting careers and capacity building in medical science, and recognising excellence in medical science.
