Agricultural land

Agricultural land (pronunciation: /ˌæɡrɪˈkʌltʃərəl lænd/) refers to the land area that is primarily used for agriculture, the systematic and controlled use of other forms of life—particularly the rearing of livestock and production of crops—to produce food for humans.

Etymology

The term "agricultural land" is derived from the Latin words agricola meaning 'farmer' and landa meaning 'land'. It has been in use since the 18th century to denote land areas used for farming and rearing livestock.

Types of Agricultural Land

There are several types of agricultural land, including:

  • Arable land: Land under temporary agricultural crops (multiple crops in a year), temporary meadows for mowing or pasture, land under market and kitchen gardens and land temporarily fallow (less than five years).
  • Permanent crops: Land cultivated with long-term crops which do not have to be replanted for several years (such as cocoa and coffee); land under trees and shrubs producing flowers, such as roses and jasmine; and nurseries (except those for forest trees, which should be classified under "forest").
  • Permanent pastures: Land used for five or more years for forage, including natural and cultivated crops.
