American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN, pronounced as A-B-P-N) is a non-profit organization that provides certification for psychiatrists and neurologists in the United States.

Etymology

The term "American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology" is derived from the organization's purpose and location. The term "board" refers to the group of professionals who oversee the certification process. "Psychiatry" and "Neurology" are the medical specialties that the board certifies.

History

The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology was founded in 1934 as a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). The ABPN is one of 24 member boards of the ABMS.

Function

The primary function of the ABPN is to certify psychiatrists and neurologists who have met the standards set by the board. The certification process involves a written and oral examination. The ABPN also offers subspecialty certifications in areas such as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, and Clinical Neurophysiology.
