Ancel Keys

Ancel Keys (pronounced: /ˈænsəl ˈkiːz/) was an American physiologist who studied the influence of diet on health. In particular, he formulated the original concepts for the Mediterranean diet and established that saturated fats, as found in milk and meat, have an adverse effect on health.

Etymology

The name "Ancel" is of French origin, meaning "God's protection". The surname "Keys" is of English origin, derived from the Old English word "caeg", meaning "key".

Biography

Ancel Keys was born on January 26, 1904, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and died on November 20, 2004, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was a prominent physiologist who studied the influence of diet on health. His work has had a significant impact on the field of nutrition.

Work

Keys is best known for his Seven Countries Study, a decades-long comparative investigation into the health effects of different dietary patterns, notably the traditional Mediterranean diet and the typical Western diet. His work led to the popularization of the Mediterranean diet and the understanding that certain types of dietary fat increase the risk of heart disease.
