Apollo Hospitals (pronunciation: /əˈpɒloʊ ˈhɒspɪtəlz/) is a chain of private hospitals in India. It was founded by Dr. Prathap C. Reddy in 1983 and has its headquarters in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Etymology

The name "Apollo" is derived from the Greek god of healing and medicine, Apollo. The term "Hospitals" is derived from the Latin word "hospes", meaning guest or stranger. It's a place where strangers are taken in, which is a metaphor for patients being taken care of.

History

Apollo Hospitals was the first corporate health care in India. The hospital was inaugurated in 1983 by then President of India, Giani Zail Singh. The first Apollo Hospital was in Chennai. The hospital has over 10,000 beds across 64 hospitals, more than 2200 pharmacies, over 100 primary care & diagnostic clinics, 115 telemedicine units across 9 countries, health insurance services, global projects consultancy, 15 academic institutions and a Research Foundation.

Apollo Hospitals provides a variety of services including Cardiology, Orthopedics, Cancer Care, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Nephrology, Critical Care, Emergency Care, Cosmetic Surgery, Eye Care, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dental Care, Dermatology, Endocrinology, ENT, Pulmonology, Radiology, Urology, and Vascular Surgery.

Awards and Recognition

Apollo Hospitals has received numerous awards and recognition for its contribution to healthcare in India. It was the first hospital in India to receive the ISO 9001:2000 certification. It has also been awarded the Golden Peacock National Quality Award and the International Asia Pacific Quality Award.
