Assistive Technology (pronunciation: /əˈsɪstɪv tɛkˈnɒlədʒi/) is a term used to refer to any device, system or design, that allows an individual to perform a task that they would otherwise be unable to do, or increases the ease and safety with which the task can be performed.

Etymology

The term "Assistive Technology" is derived from the English words "assist" and "technology". "Assist" comes from the Latin word "assistere", meaning "to stand by, help, support", while "technology" comes from the Greek words "techne", meaning "art, skill, craft", and "logia", meaning "study of".
