Athelia

Athelia (pronounced: ath-ee-lee-uh) is a rare congenital condition characterized by the absence of one or both nipples.

Etymology

The term "Athelia" is derived from the Greek words "a-", meaning "without", and "thelia", meaning "nipple".

Definition

Athelia is a condition that can occur in both males and females, although it is more commonly observed in females. It can occur as an isolated anomaly, or it can be associated with other physical anomalies or syndromes, such as Poland syndrome or Ectodermal Dysplasia.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of Athelia is the absence of one or both nipples. This can be identified at birth. In some cases, the absence of the nipple may be accompanied by the absence of the areola, the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Athelia is typically made at birth by physical examination. In some cases, additional imaging tests such as ultrasound or MRI may be used to confirm the diagnosis and to identify any associated anomalies or conditions.

Treatment

There is no specific treatment for Athelia. Management of the condition typically involves addressing any associated conditions or symptoms. In some cases, individuals may choose to undergo surgical nipple reconstruction for cosmetic reasons.
