The term "Bencao Gangmu" is derived from the Chinese words "Bencao" (本草), meaning "roots and herbs," and "Gangmu" (纲目), meaning "outline."

History

The Bencao Gangmu is considered one of the most comprehensive and complete pharmacopeias in Chinese history. It was completed in 1578 after 27 years of research by Li Shizhen, a renowned physician and pharmacologist of the Ming Dynasty. The book was not published until several years after Li's death.

Content

The Bencao Gangmu contains detailed descriptions of 1,892 distinct herbs, including their properties, effects, indications, and contraindications. It also includes over 11,000 prescriptions for various ailments. The book is divided into 52 volumes, each covering different categories of materia medica.

Influence

The Bencao Gangmu has had a significant impact on traditional Chinese medicine and pharmacology. It has been translated into several languages and is still used as a reference in modern medicine.
