Beverage

Beverage (pronunciation: /ˈbɛv(ə)rɪdʒ/) is a drinkable liquid that is often consumed for sustenance, hydration, or pleasure. Drinks play important roles in human culture and are often consumed socially.

Etymology

The term "beverage" comes from the Old French word "bevrage," derived from the Latin verb "bevere," meaning "to drink."

Types of Beverages

Beverages can be broadly classified into two types: alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages contain ethanol, a type of alcohol produced by fermentation of grains, fruits, or other sources of sugar. Non-alcoholic beverages do not contain ethanol and include drinks like water, juice, coffee, tea, and soft drinks.

Alcoholic Beverages

Alcoholic beverages include beer, wine, and spirits. Beer is typically made from barley, water, hops, and yeast. Wine is made from fermented grapes or other fruits. Spirits are distilled beverages with a higher alcohol content and include drinks like whiskey, vodka, and rum.

Non-Alcoholic Beverages

Non-alcoholic beverages include drinks like water, juice, coffee, tea, and soft drinks. Water is the most essential beverage for human survival. Juice is a drink made from the extraction or pressing of natural liquids contained in fruit or vegetables. Coffee and tea are both beverages made by brewing processed leaves or beans. Soft drinks are carbonated beverages that are usually sweetened and non-alcoholic.
