Boxing (Medicine)

Boxing (pronounced: /ˈbɒksɪŋ/) is a combat sport that involves two participants of similar weight fighting each other with their fists in a series of one to three-minute intervals called rounds. In both Olympic and professional divisions, the fighters (known as boxers) avoid their opponent's punches whilst trying to land punches of their own. The goal is to weaken and ultimately knock out the opponent.

Etymology

The term "boxing" comes from the box-like shape created by the boundary of the fighting area, traditionally a square ring.

Medical Aspects

Boxer's fracture

A Boxer's fracture is a break in the neck of the fifth metacarpal bone in the hand. It usually occurs when a person hits an object with a closed fist.

Dehydration

Dehydration is a common issue in boxing, often as a result of the intense physical exertion and sweating during a fight, or from rapid weight loss attempts before a weigh-in.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans, and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma, including boxers.
