Brodmann area 23

Brodmann area 23 (BA23), also known as the posterior cingulate cortex, is a region of the brain that is part of the limbic system. It is named after its discoverer, Korbinian Brodmann, a German neurologist.

Pronunciation

Brodmann area 23 is pronounced as "Brod-man area twenty-three".

Etymology

The term "Brodmann area 23" is named after Korbinian Brodmann, who was a German neurologist and known for his definition of the cerebral cortex into 52 distinct regions from their cytoarchitectonic characteristics.

Function

The Brodmann area 23, or the posterior cingulate cortex, is involved in various cognitive functions, including attention and memory. It is also associated with the default mode network, a network of interacting brain regions known to have activity highly correlated with each other and distinct from other networks in the brain.

Related Terms

  • Cingulate Cortex: The part of the brain situated in the medial aspect of the cerebral cortex. The cingulate cortex includes the entire cingulate gyrus, which lies immediately above the corpus callosum, and the continuation of this in the cingulate sulcus. The cingulate cortex is divided into two parts: the anterior and the posterior cingulate cortex, with the latter including the Brodmann area 23.

  • Limbic System: A complex system of nerves and networks in the brain, involving several areas near the edge of the cortex concerned with instinct and mood. It controls the basic emotions (fear, pleasure, anger) and drives (hunger, sex, dominance, care of offspring).
