Brodmann area 27

Brodmann area 27 (pronunciation: /ˈbrɔːdmən ˈɛəriə twɛntiˈsɛvən/), also known as the presubiculum, is a region in the brain that is part of the limbic system. It is named after its discoverer, Korbinian Brodmann, a German neurologist who first described the area in 1909.

Etymology

The term "Brodmann area 27" is derived from the name of its discoverer, Korbinian Brodmann, and the numerical designation assigned to it in his classification system. The term "presubiculum" comes from the Latin words "pre" meaning "before" and "subiculum" meaning "support", referring to its position anterior to the subiculum in the brain.

Function

Brodmann area 27 is involved in various cognitive functions, including memory processing and spatial navigation. It receives inputs from other areas of the brain, such as the entorhinal cortex, and sends outputs to the hippocampus, playing a crucial role in the formation and retrieval of memories.
