Carbidopa/levodopa

Carbidopa/levodopa (pronunciation: kar-bi-DOE-pa/lee-voe-DOE-pa) is a combination medication used to treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease or Parkinson-like symptoms such as shakiness, stiffness, and difficulty moving.

Etymology

The name "Carbidopa/levodopa" is derived from the names of the two active ingredients in the medication. "Carbidopa" is a decarboxylase inhibitor, which prevents levodopa from breaking down before it reaches the brain. "Levodopa" is a chemical closely related to dopamine, which allows it to pass through the blood-brain barrier where it is then converted into dopamine.

Usage

Carbidopa/levodopa works by improving the levels of dopamine in the brain, helping to control the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. It is usually taken by mouth, with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually 3 to 4 times daily.
