Charles University
Charles University
Charles University (Czech: Univerzita Karlova, pronounced [ˈunɪvɛrzɪta ˈkarlova]) is the oldest and largest university in the Czech Republic. Founded in 1348, it was the first university in Central Europe, east of France and north of Italy. Charles University is one of the world's oldest universities still in operation.
Etymology
The university was named after its founder, Charles IV, who established it with a charter. The name "Charles" is derived from the Old High German word "Karl", meaning "free man" or "man" (in the sense of a male human, not the generic meaning of "human being").
