Competencies

Competencies (/kəmˈpɛtənsiːz/) are a set of defined behaviors that provide a structured guide enabling the identification, evaluation and development of the behaviors in individual employees. The term is derived from the Latin word "competentia", meaning "meeting together, agreement, symmetry".

Definition

In the context of a workplace, competencies often refers to the behaviors, skills, and knowledge that an employee needs to perform their job effectively. These can include technical skills, interpersonal abilities, problem-solving capabilities, and more.

Types of Competencies

There are several types of competencies that are commonly recognized in the workplace:

  • Core competencies: These are the key abilities that are necessary for an organization to perform its core functions. They are often unique to the organization and provide a competitive advantage.
  • Behavioral competencies: These refer to the behaviors that employees need to demonstrate in order to perform their jobs effectively. They can include things like teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Technical competencies: These are the specific technical skills and knowledge that are needed to perform a particular job. They can include things like programming skills for a software engineer, or financial analysis skills for an accountant.
  • Functional competencies: These are the skills and knowledge that are needed to perform a specific function within an organization. They can include things like project management skills, or knowledge of a specific industry or market.

Assessment of Competencies

Assessment of competencies is often done through a process called competency mapping. This involves identifying the specific competencies that are needed for a job, and then assessing an individual's proficiency in those areas. This can be done through a variety of methods, including performance reviews, assessments, and feedback from colleagues and supervisors.

Development of Competencies

Development of competencies is often a key focus of employee training and development programs. This can involve providing training and development opportunities to help employees improve their skills and knowledge, as well as providing feedback and coaching to help them improve their behaviors.
