A Data set (pronounced: /ˈdeɪtə sɛt/) is a collection of related, discrete items of related data that may be accessed individually or in combination or managed as a whole entity.

Etymology

The term "Data set" originated from the field of computer science and statistics. "Data" is a plural of "datum", which is originally a Latin noun meaning "something given". "Set" comes from the Old English 'settan' meaning to 'put in place'.

Definition

A data set is a collection of data, usually presented in tabular form. Each column represents a particular variable. Each row corresponds to a given member of the data set in question. Its size can be arbitrary, not exceeding the physical limits of the storage medium.
