David Nutt

David Nutt (pronounced /dɛɪvɪd nʌt/) is a British neuropsychopharmacologist specializing in the research of drugs that affect the brain and conditions such as addiction, anxiety, and sleep. He was a former government advisor in the UK and is currently the Edmond J. Safra Professor of Neuropsychopharmacology in the Division of Brain Sciences at Imperial College London.

Etymology

The name David is of Hebrew origin, meaning "beloved". Nutt is an English surname of unknown origin.

Career

David Nutt's career has been marked by his research into psychedelic drugs and their potential therapeutic uses. He has published over 400 original research papers, a similar number of reviews and book chapters, eight government reports on drugs, and 31 books. He is also the president of the European Brain Council and founding chair of DrugScience, a non-profit that provides independent, evidence-based information on drugs.

Controversy

Nutt's work has often been controversial, particularly his views on drug policy. In 2009, he was dismissed from his position as chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) after he criticized the UK government's decision to reclassify cannabis as a Class B drug.
