E-patient

E-patient (pronounced "ee-patient") is a term that refers to a health consumer who uses the internet and other electronic tools to gather information about a medical condition of personal interest. The term was coined by Dr. Tom Ferguson, a pioneer in the field of eHealth.

Etymology

The "E" in e-patient originally stood for "electronic," as in "electronic patient." However, it has since evolved to encompass a variety of other meanings, including "empowered," "engaged," "equipped," and "enabled."

Definition

An e-patient is a patient who is equipped, enabled, empowered and engaged in their health care decisions. They actively seek out information online, use EHRs, participate in online patient communities, and use health apps and other digital health tools.
