Ear Instillation

Ear instillation is a method of delivering medication or cleaning solution into the ear canal. The procedure is commonly used to treat conditions such as otitis media and otitis externa, and to remove excess earwax.

Pronunciation

Ear instillation: /ɪər ˌɪnstɪˈleɪʃən/

Etymology

The term "instillation" comes from the Latin word "instillare", meaning "to drop, trickle, or pour in".

Procedure

Ear instillation involves the following steps:

  1. The person receiving the treatment should tilt their head or lie down with the affected ear facing upwards.
  2. The person administering the treatment should gently pull the outer ear upwards and backwards. This straightens the ear canal and allows the medication or solution to reach the eardrum.
  3. The medication or solution is then dropped into the ear canal. The person should remain in this position for a few minutes to allow the medication or solution to penetrate the ear canal.
  4. If a cotton ball is used, it should be placed gently at the entrance of the ear canal, not pushed in.

Precautions

Before ear instillation, it is important to ensure that the eardrum is not perforated, as this could allow the medication or solution to enter the middle ear, potentially causing damage. If the person experiences pain during the procedure, it should be stopped immediately.
