egg banking - (pronounced) (. . . BANKING) The process of freezing one or more unfertilized egg cells (egg cells that have not been combined with sperm) in order to preserve them for future use. The eggs are thawed and fertilized in the laboratory to produce embryos that can be placed in a woman's uterus. Egg banks are being studied as a mode of fertility preservation. It may be useful for women with cancer who want to have children after undergoing radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or certain types of surgery that can lead to infertility. Also called egg cryopreservation, egg freezing and egg cryopreservation
