Endel Tulving (pronounced: EN-del TUL-ving) is a notable cognitive psychologist and cognitive neuroscientist, best known for his pioneering research on human memory. He was born on May 26, 1927, in Estonian.

The name "Endel" is of Estonian origin, while "Tulving" is a common surname in Estonia.

Career

Tulving's career began in the 1950s when he started his research on human memory. He is best known for his proposal of the distinction between semantic and episodic memory. Semantic memory refers to general world knowledge that we have accumulated throughout our lives, while episodic memory is the memory of autobiographical events that can be explicitly stated.

Tulving also introduced the concept of encoding specificity, which suggests that memory utilizes information from the specific encoding context in which it was learned.
