Esox (pronounced: /ˈiːsɒks/) is a genus of freshwater fish, the only living genus in the family Esoxidae—the esocids. This includes the pike, pickerels, and muskellunge. The type species is Esox lucius, the northern pike.
Etymology
The name Esox (pronounced: /ˈiːsɒks/) derives from the Greek word 'isos' meaning equal and 'oxys' meaning sharp, referring to the fish's teeth.
Species
The genus Esox contains five to seven species, and a further four to six subspecies have been described:
- Esox americanus – American pickerel
- Esox lucius – Northern pike
- Esox masquinongy – Muskellunge
- Esox niger – Chain pickerel
- Esox reichertii – Amur pike
