EssilorLuxottica (pronunciation: /ɛsɪlɔːrlʊksɒtɪkə/) is a multinational corporation specializing in the design, manufacture, and distribution of ophthalmic lenses, optical equipment, and eyewear. It was formed in 2018 by the merger of Essilor and Luxottica.

Etymology

The name "EssilorLuxottica" is a portmanteau of the names of its two constituent companies, Essilor and Luxottica. Essilor was a French-based international ophthalmic optics company that originated from Essel and Silor, two companies that dominated the French optical eyewear market in the mid-20th century. Luxottica, on the other hand, was an Italian eyewear conglomerate and the world's largest company in the eyewear industry.

History

EssilorLuxottica was formed on October 1, 2018, following the successful completion of the merger of Essilor and Luxottica. The merger brought together the largest lens manufacturer with the largest eyewear maker, creating a vertically integrated company that controls a significant portion of the eyewear market.

Operations

EssilorLuxottica operates in three main segments: Lenses & Optical Instruments, Sunglasses & Readers, and Equipment. The company designs, manufactures, and markets a wide range of lenses to correct or protect eyesight. It also produces and distributes high-quality frames, sunglasses, and reading glasses.
