Family Constellations

Family Constellations (pronunciation: /ˈfæmɪli kɒnstɪˈleɪʃənz/) is a therapeutic method developed by psychotherapist Bert Hellinger in the 1990s. The term refers to constellations set up in a group setting to represent a family system.

Etymology

The term "Family Constellations" is a direct translation from the German "Familienaufstellungen". "Familien" means family and "Aufstellungen" means arrangements or constellations.

Method

In a Family Constellations session, a client presents a personal issue and then other group members are chosen to represent the client's family members or other relevant people. These representatives are arranged in the room in relation to each other, forming a constellation. The therapist then guides the client to observe and experience the constellation, which can lead to insights and resolution of the issue.

Criticism

Family Constellations has been criticized for its lack of empirical evidence and for its potential to retraumatize clients. However, many practitioners and clients report positive experiences and outcomes.
