Fiji (pronounced /ˈfiːdʒiː/ FEE-jee), officially the Republic of Fiji (Fijian: Matanitu Tugalala o Viti; Fiji Hindi: फ़िजी गणराज्य Fiji Ganarajya), is an island country in Melanesia, part of Oceania in the South Pacific Ocean.
Etymology
The name "Fiji" is derived from the Tongan language word viti, which means "east" or "sunrise". The original settlers named their home after looking towards the sun in the east when they arrived on the islands.
