Forensics (pronunciation: /fəˈrɛnsɪks/), derived from the Latin word forensis meaning "of or before the forum", is the application of scientific methods and techniques to the investigation of crime.

Etymology

The term "forensics" is derived from the Latin word forensis which means "of or before the forum". In ancient Rome, the forum was a public place where, among other things, legal matters were discussed. Thus, the term is used to denote the idea of arguing or discussing a matter publicly.
