Gensini Score

The Gensini score (pronunciation: /dʒɛnˈsiːni skɔːr/) is a system used in medicine to quantify the severity of coronary artery disease. It was developed by Dr. Goffredo Gensini in the late 20th century.

Etymology

The Gensini score is named after its creator, Dr. Goffredo Gensini, an Italian cardiologist.

Description

The Gensini score is calculated based on the degree of stenosis (narrowing) and the location of the narrowing within the coronary arteries. The score assigns higher values to stenosis in the proximal portion of the arteries, reflecting the greater risk associated with these blockages.

Calculation

The Gensini score is calculated by assigning a severity score to each coronary stenosis according to the degree of luminal narrowing and its geographic importance. The scores for each lesion are then summed to give a total Gensini score. The higher the Gensini score, the more severe the coronary artery disease.
