Girls (pronunciation: /ɡɜːrlz/) are the female offspring in humans and many other species. The term is typically used to refer to individuals who are biologically female and are under the age of adulthood.

Etymology

The term "girl" originates from the Old English word "gyrle", which was used to refer to a young person of either sex. It was not until the 16th century that the term began to be used specifically to refer to female children.
