Globozoospermia

Globozoospermia (pronounced: glo-bo-zoo-sper-mia) is a rare condition in males characterized by the production of round-headed spermatozoa. It is associated with male infertility due to the inability of the sperm to penetrate the egg during fertilization.

Etymology

The term "Globozoospermia" is derived from the Latin words "globus" meaning globe or sphere, and "zoospermia" meaning animal sperm.

Causes

Globozoospermia is often caused by genetic mutations, particularly in the DPY19L2 gene. Other potential causes include improper acrosome formation and issues with sperm maturation.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of globozoospermia is infertility. Men with this condition may not exhibit any other symptoms.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of globozoospermia is typically made through a semen analysis, which can identify the characteristic round-headed sperm. Genetic testing may also be used to identify mutations in the DPY19L2 gene.

Treatment

Treatment options for globozoospermia include Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE). These treatments involve the direct injection of sperm into an egg or the extraction of sperm directly from the testes.
