HCPCS Level 2 (pronounced "H-C-P-C-S Level Two"), also known as Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System Level 2, is a standardized coding system used in the United States to describe the specific items and services provided in the delivery of health care.

Etymology

The acronym HCPCS stands for Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System. It was established in 1978 by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to provide a standardized coding system for describing the specific items and services provided in health care delivery.

Description

HCPCS Level 2 codes are alphanumeric and primarily include non-physician services such as ambulance services, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies when used outside a physician's office. They are used by Medicare and Medicaid systems, but are also used by other third-party payers.
