Healthcare in Belize

Healthcare in Belize (pronunciation: /ˈbɛliːz/), is the system of medical services and institutions that provide health care to the people of Belize. The healthcare system in Belize is a mix of government-run facilities, private hospitals and clinics, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Etymology

The term "healthcare" is derived from the Old English words "hǣlth" meaning "wholeness, a being whole, sound or well," and "carian" meaning "to care for, attend to." The term "Belize" is believed to be derived from the Mayan word "Belix," meaning "muddy water," in reference to the Belize River.

History

The Ministry of Health is the government body responsible for overseeing healthcare in Belize. It was established in 1973, following the country's independence from Britain. The Ministry of Health operates several hospitals and clinics throughout the country, including the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City, which is the country's largest hospital.

Private Healthcare

In addition to the public healthcare system, there are also several private hospitals and clinics in Belize. These facilities often offer a wider range of services than public hospitals, but at a higher cost. Some of the most well-known private healthcare providers in Belize include the Belize Medical Associates and the Belize Healthcare Partners Limited.

Non-Governmental Organizations

Several non-governmental organizations also provide healthcare services in Belize. These organizations often focus on specific areas of health, such as maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, and mental health services. Some of the most prominent NGOs in Belize's healthcare sector include the Belize Family Life Association and the Belize Red Cross.
