Hemisphere (Medicine)

Hemisphere (pronunciation: /ˈhɛmɪsfɪər/) is a term used in various branches of medicine to refer to one half of a spherical or roughly spherical structure or organ. The term is derived from the Greek words 'hemi' meaning 'half' and 'sphaira' meaning 'sphere'.

In the context of neurology, the term is often used to refer to the two halves of the brain, known as the cerebral hemispheres. Each hemisphere is further divided into four main regions or lobes: the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and occipital lobe.

In cardiology, the term can refer to the two halves of the heart, with the right hemisphere including the right atrium and right ventricle, and the left hemisphere including the left atrium and left ventricle.

In ophthalmology, the term can refer to the two halves of the eye, divided by the cornea and lens.
