Etymology

The term "International Olympic Committee" is derived from the Greek word "Olympikos" (pertaining to Olympus), referring to the ancient games held at Mount Olympus, and "committee", a term of Latin origin ("com-" meaning "with" and "mittere" meaning "to send"), referring to a group of people entrusted with a certain task.

History

The International Olympic Committee was founded on 23 June 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin at the University of Paris. The IOC organizes the modern Olympic Games held in Summer and Winter, every four years.

Structure

The IOC is governed by the Olympic Charter, under the leadership of the President of the International Olympic Committee. The members of the IOC are elected from the National Olympic Committees.
