Invitrogen (pronounced: in-vi-tro-gen) is a product brand under the company Thermo Fisher Scientific, which is a leading provider of research reagents and tools in the field of life sciences. The term "Invitrogen" is derived from the Latin words "in vitro" meaning "in glass" and "gen" meaning "to produce".

Invitrogen products are designed to help scientists in their research, particularly in the areas of genomics, proteomics, and cell biology. These products include a wide range of kits, reagents, instruments, and other tools that are used in various laboratory procedures.

History

Invitrogen was originally a standalone company founded in 1987 in San Diego, California. It was known for its innovations in the field of life sciences, particularly in the development of kits and reagents for molecular and cell biology research. In 2008, Invitrogen merged with Applied Biosystems, another leading provider of life science research tools, to form Life Technologies. In 2014, Life Technologies was acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Invitrogen became a product brand under this company.

Products
