Kuwait (koo-WAIT)

Kuwait (pronounced koo-WAIT) is a country located in the Middle East, specifically on the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south and Iraq to the north. The country has a rich history and culture, and is known for its significant oil reserves.

Etymology

The name "Kuwait" is derived from the Arabic "kut," meaning "fort." This is likely a reference to the protective forts that were historically built in the area.

Geography

Kuwait is a small, flat country with a total land area of approximately 17,820 square kilometers. It is largely desert, with a few oases. The country has a coastline along the Persian Gulf, which is known for its beautiful beaches and rich marine life.

History

Kuwait has a long history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Bronze Age. The modern state of Kuwait was established in the 18th century by the Al-Sabah family, who still rule the country today. Kuwait gained independence from British protection in 1961.

Economy

The economy of Kuwait is heavily dependent on oil exports. The country has the sixth largest oil reserves in the world, and the petroleum industry accounts for nearly half of the country's GDP. Other important sectors include finance, real estate, and construction.

Culture

Kuwaiti culture is a mix of traditional Arabian customs and modern influences. The country is known for its music, particularly the sawt, a type of urban music, and the khaliji, a genre of Arabian pop music. Kuwait is also famous for its cuisine, which includes dishes such as machboos (a spiced rice dish) and mutabbaq samak (a type of fish curry).
