Landlocked

Landlocked (/ˈlændˌlɒkt/), from the Old English land meaning "ground, soil, country, inhabited place, territory," and loca meaning "enclosure, prison, cell; place; stead, station; pig-sty, hovel".

A landlocked country or region is one that is entirely surrounded by land, with no access to the open sea, except through the territory of other countries. Landlocked areas may be found in various parts of the world, but they are most common in Central Asia and Africa.

Etymology

The term "landlocked" is derived from the Old English words land and loca. Land refers to "ground, soil, country, inhabited place, territory," while loca means "enclosure, prison, cell; place; stead, station; pig-sty, hovel". The term was first used in the 17th century to describe a country or region that is surrounded by land on all sides and has no direct access to the sea.
