mammalian target of rapamycin - (pronounced) (muh-MA-lee-un TAR-hol. . . RA-puh-MY-sin) protein that helps control multiple cell functions, including cell division and survival, and binds to rapamycin and other drugs. Rapamycin's mammalian target may be more active in some types of cancer cells than in normal cells. Blocking the mammalian target of rapamycin can lead to cancer cell death. It's a type of serine/threonine protein kinase. Also referred to as the mechanistic target of rapamycin and mTOR
