MammoSite - (pronounced) (MA-moh page) A system used to give internal radiation therapy to breast cancer patients after surgery to remove their cancer. MammoSite only targets the part of the breast where the cancer has been found. After a patient has had a lumpectomy to remove the cancer, a small balloon at the end of a catheter (thin tube) is inserted into the empty space left by the surgery. The balloon is then filled with fluid and left in place. Radioactive seeds are inserted into the balloon with the catheter twice a day for five days and removed again each time. After the treatment is finished, the catheter and balloon are removed. MammoSite is a form of intracavitary brachytherapy and partial breast radiation therapy (PBRT). Also called balloon catheter irradiation
