Medical Council of India

The Medical Council of India (MCI) is a statutory body for establishing uniform and high standards of medical education in India. The MCI grants recognition of medical qualifications, gives accreditation to medical schools, grants registration to medical practitioners, and monitors medical practice in India. The current version of the council, superseded by the National Medical Commission in 2020, was established in 1934 under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933, now repealed, with the responsibility of establishing and maintaining high standards of medical education and recognition of medical qualifications in India.

Etymology

The term "Medical Council of India" is a combination of three words. "Medical" is derived from the Latin "medicus", meaning "physician". "Council" comes from the Latin "concilium", meaning "a meeting or assembly". "India" is derived from the name of the Indus River, from the Old Persian word "hinduš".
