A mobile device (pronounced: /ˈmoʊ.baɪl dɪˈvaɪs/) is a general term for any handheld computer or smartphone. The term is interchangeable with 'handheld,' 'handheld device,' and 'handheld computer.' Tablets, e-readers, smartphones, PDAs and handheld gaming consoles are all types of mobile devices.
Etymology
The term "mobile device" comes from the Latin word "mobilis," which means "movable" or "capable of moving." It was first used in the context of computing in the 1990s, as more and more computing tasks began to be performed on non-desktop devices.
