Molarity

Molarity (pronunciation: /məˈlærɪti/), also known as molar concentration, is a measure of the concentration of a solute in a solution, or of any chemical species, in terms of amount of substance in a given volume.

Etymology

The term "molarity" is derived from the word "mole", which is a unit of measurement in chemistry for the amount of a substance. The suffix "-arity" is from Latin "-aritas", meaning "condition or quality".

Definition

Molarity is defined as the number of moles of solute per litre of solution. It is commonly used in chemistry to express concentrations of solutions. The unit of molarity is the mole per litre, symbolized by M.

Calculation

The molarity of a solution is calculated by dividing the number of moles of solute by the volume of the solution in litres.

Related Terms

  • Mole (unit): The mole is the base unit of amount of substance in the International System of Units (SI). It is used to express the amount of a chemical substance.
  • Solute: A solute is a substance that is dissolved in a solution. In the context of molarity, the solute is the substance that is being measured.
  • Solution: A solution is a homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances. In such a mixture, a solute is a substance dissolved in another substance, known as a solvent.
  • Concentration: In chemistry, concentration is the measure of how much of a given substance there is mixed with another substance. This can apply to any sort of chemical mixture, but most frequently the concept is limited to homogeneous mixtures, also known as solutions.
  • Solvent: A solvent is a substance that dissolves a solute, resulting in a solution. A solvent is usually a liquid but can also be a solid or a gas.
