Nicolae Paulescu

Nicolae Paulescu (pronounced: nee-co-lie pow-les-coo) is a renowned Romanian physiologist, professor, and politician, best known for his pioneering work in the field of diabetes and the discovery of insulin.

Etymology

The name "Nicolae" is of Greek origin, derived from "Nikolaos" which means "victory of the people". "Paulescu" is a common Romanian surname.

Biography

Nicolae Paulescu was born on October 30, 1869, in Bucharest, Romania. He studied at the University of Paris, where he obtained his doctorate in 1897. He returned to Romania and became a professor at the University of Bucharest.

Discovery of Insulin

Paulescu's most significant contribution to medical science was his research on the pancreatic extract, which he named "pancreine" (later known as insulin). His work laid the foundation for the development of insulin therapy for diabetes mellitus.

Political Career

In addition to his scientific pursuits, Paulescu was also involved in politics. He was a member of the Romanian National Party and served as a senator.
