Northwestern University (pronounced: /ˌnɔːrθˈwɛstərn/ /juːnɪˈvɜːrsɪti/) is a private research university based in Evanston, Illinois, United States. The university is composed of twelve schools and colleges, offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.
Etymology
The name "Northwestern University" is derived from the university's location in the Northwestern Territory, the area of the United States that includes the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and parts of Minnesota. The university was founded in 1851 by nine men whose goal was to establish a university that would serve the Northwestern Territory.
