Ochsner Health System (pronounced: OX-ner) is a non-profit, academic, healthcare system based in Southeast Louisiana. It is named after its founder, Dr. Alton Ochsner, a well-known surgeon and medical educator.

Etymology

The name "Ochsner" is of Swiss origin and is a surname. It was adopted as the name of the health system to honor its founder, Dr. Alton Ochsner.

History

Ochsner Health System was established in 1942 by Dr. Alton Ochsner and four colleagues. Over the years, it has grown into one of the largest independent academic health systems in the United States.
